YouTube thumbnail grabber
the manual route, explained, and the one-click one

2 ways by hand with the image address, or with the app
11 characters all you need from the link: the video id
5 names each size has its own in the address
0 credits free in the app
Quick answer

Take the video id (what follows v=: 11 letters and digits) and open https://img.youtube.com/vi/ID/maxresdefault.jpg in your browser. If it errors, swap maxresdefault for sddefault or hqdefault. In AppGrabbit it's paste the link in the Thumbnail tab: you see it full size and save it under the video's name. Nothing to install, or the app

The image address, step by step

Every YouTube video has an 11-character id. In a long link it follows v= (youtube.com/watch?v=AbCdEfGhIjK); in a short one it follows the slash (youtu.be/AbCdEfGhIjK); in a Short it follows shorts/. Anything after & (like &list= or &t=) is not part of the id. With that id, the cover's address is https://img.youtube.com/vi/AbCdEfGhIjK/maxresdefault.jpg. i.ytimg.com works in place of img.youtube.com: same server.

Why you sometimes get an error or a grey box

Not every video has the large size. If maxresdefault.jpg answers with a 404, that video doesn't have it: try sddefault.jpg (640×480), then hqdefault.jpg (480×360), which always exists. If what you get is a tiny grey image with a box, the id was copied wrong. And if the video is private, YouTube hands the cover to no one: there is no trick.

"Watch YouTube in a small window" is something else

If what you want is to keep watching the video in a little floating window while you do something else, that's picture-in-picture: in Chrome or Edge, right-click the video twice and choose "Picture in picture". This guide is about the video's cover, the image you see before pressing play.

Why people look at it full size

  • Reference — study how the cover of a video that works is built, without the title on top, before making your own
  • Notes — keep the cover of a lecture or a talk next to your notes
  • Checking — if you uploaded a thumbnail and it doesn't look updated, the address shows what YouTube has stored in each size
  • Player poster — to embed the video on a page or in a slide deck with its opening image

Step by step

  • 1
Copy the video link — from the browser's address bar or with Share › Copy link.
  • 2
Pull out the id — the 11 characters after v= (or after youtu.be/ or shorts/).
  • 3
Build the address — https://img.youtube.com/vi/ + id + /maxresdefault.jpg, and open it in a new tab.
  • 4
If it fails, step down — sddefault.jpg, then hqdefault.jpg. That order goes from largest to smallest.
  • 5
Save it — right-click › Save image as… It's named after the size (maxresdefault.jpg). In AppGrabbit you paste the link and save it under the video's title, nothing to build.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with youtu.be links and Shorts?

Yes. The id is the same 11 characters in every form of the link; only where you copy it from changes.

Why isn't the thumbnail I see the one the creator set a moment ago?

YouTube takes a while to refresh the image in every size. The address shows what it has stored right now; try again later.

Can I see the cover of a private video?

No. YouTube hands out the cover of a private video through no address, and the app can't either.

What's different with AppGrabbit?

You build nothing: paste the link, the app tries the sizes that exist, shows you the cover full size and saves it under the video's title as JPG, PNG or WebP. Free, no credits.

Does it work on a phone?

The address works in any browser, phones included. AppGrabbit is for Windows.
