yt-dlp with a graphical interface for Windows
The same engine, with no terminal, no PATH and no updating it by hand.
Updated: October 2026 · 6 min read
yt-dlp is the most reliable download engine there is, and also the one most people give up on: it runs from the command line, FFmpeg has to be installed separately and put on the PATH, and every time YouTube changes something you have to update it by hand. A graphical interface fixes that. AppGrabbit is one: it ships yt-dlp and FFmpeg inside the installer, updates them on its own, solves the "PO token" YouTube has required since 2025, and adds what yt-dlp doesn't do: transcribing and subtitling with AI on your PC, converting and cutting. Paste the link, pick the quality, done. 1 credit per video · 5 free a month

What yt-dlp does very well, and what it makes you do
yt-dlp downloads video and audio from hundreds of sites, picks the best format, joins the tracks with FFmpeg and updates almost every week. It's the base of nearly every serious downloader, this one included. The price is how you use it: open a terminal, type yt-dlp -f "bv*+ba" URL, find out FFmpeg is missing, download it, put it on the PATH, and repeat yt-dlp -U every time a video stops downloading. For people who live in the terminal it's routine. For everyone else it's a lost afternoon.
The interfaces that exist for yt-dlp on Windows
| Program | What it is | Price | What it adds to yt-dlp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stacher | Interface for yt-dlp on Windows, Mac and Linux; installs yt-dlp and FFmpeg for you | Standard version free; a paid mode with extras (library, themes, player) | Download queue and access to many yt-dlp options |
| Parabolic | Free interface with its code on GitHub; Windows, Linux and Mac | Free | Several downloads at once, audio formats, the site's own subtitles, cutting by time |
| Others from GitHub (ytdlp-interface, yt-dlp-gui and the like) | Simple windows made by one person | Free | The basics; several leave you to download yt-dlp and FFmpeg yourself |
| AppGrabbit | App for Windows 10/11 with yt-dlp and FFmpeg inside, plus AI on your PC | Free with 5 credits a month; Pro USD 8.99 a month | Transcribing and subtitling with AI, converting, cutting, following channels, Library, Chrome extension, PO token solved |

What AppGrabbit does under the hood
Exactly what it ships and what it does on its own
- yt-dlp and FFmpeg go inside the installer (109 MB). Nothing to download, nothing to put on the PATH, no need to know where they ended up.
- It updates itself: at startup and every four hours the app checks for a new yt-dlp and swaps it in without asking. When YouTube breaks something, the fix arrives without you doing anything.
- PO token: the component YouTube has required since 2025 comes separately (it runs with deno, on your PC) and the app uses it when a download asks for it.
- You pick the quality from a list (up to 4K, or audio only as MP3/M4A) and the app builds the request to yt-dlp. There are no flags to learn.
- Queue and Library: several downloads in a row, each with its progress, and everything you downloaded in one place.
What yt-dlp doesn't do and this does
Transcribe with AI any video or a recording of yours into a clean .txt with a prompt on top for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini; subtitle with AI (.srt, .vtt, .txt, or the video with the subtitles burned in) without uploading anything: Whisper runs on your computer. Convert to MP4, MP3, WAV, ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHR HQ for Premiere and DaVinci Resolve. Cut an exact clip, follow channels and get what's new, and an extension for Chrome, Edge and Brave that puts a button on every video.
What it doesn't have, so there are no surprises
It doesn't take yt-dlp options of your own: if you need a specific flag, the terminal or Stacher will serve you better. It doesn't use your browser cookies, so it doesn't download private or paid content. It's for Windows 10 and 11 only. And the Free plan runs on credits: 5 a month, with 1 extra every 48 hours when you hit 0.
Step by step
- 1Install AppGrabbit. 109 MB, Windows 10 and 11. Windows will say it protected your PC because the installer is not code-signed: More info › Run anyway.
- 2Paste the link in the Download tab: YouTube (videos, Shorts, playlists, Mixes), TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Pinterest, Twitch or SoundCloud.
- 3Pick the quality from the list (up to 4K) or audio only. The video card appears on its own.
- 4Download. The queue shows the progress; if YouTube asks for the PO token, the app solves it.
- 5Find it in the Library or in your downloads folder, and if you like, transcribe or subtitle it from there.
Frequently asked questions
Underneath, yes: it uses yt-dlp to download and FFmpeg to join video and audio, both packed inside the installer and updated by the app. On top it is an interface with a queue, a Library, transcription and subtitles. You don't have to install anything else or touch a terminal.
No. AppGrabbit picks the format for you based on the quality you choose (up to 4K, or audio only). If you need command-line flags of your own, yt-dlp itself or an interface that exposes them, like Stacher, will serve you better.
Because YouTube and the other platforms change their sites every few weeks and yt-dlp releases a new version to keep up. On the command line, updating it is on you; AppGrabbit does it by itself at startup and every four hours.
It's a check YouTube has required since 2025 for many downloads; without it you get errors like "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot". AppGrabbit ships the component that solves it (it runs with deno, on your PC) and uses it only when needed.
The Free plan comes with 5 credits a month: 1 credit is one video, one batch of up to 10 links, one transcript or one converted file. When you hit 0 you can claim 1 more every 48 hours. Pro removes credits and unlocks playlists and clips for USD 8.99 a month; the 7-day pass costs USD 3.99 and doesn't renew.
No. AppGrabbit doesn't read your browser cookies and doesn't sign in to any platform: it downloads what is public. For private or paid videos you need another tool.
