What converting an image to vector means

A JPG or PNG is a grid of pixels: if you enlarge it, it pixelates. A vector (SVG) describes the image with shapes and colors, which is why it scales up without limit. Converting an image to vector means "tracing" it: a program follows the edges of each color and turns them into curves. AppGrabbit uses VTracer, a tracer with its code on GitHub, and if the image is small it first cleans it up with the AI from the Enhance tab.

How to convert an image to SVG, step by step

  1. 1
Install AppGrabbit. 163 MB, Windows 10 and 11, no account. The AI engine comes built in: there's nothing else to download. Windows will say it protected your PC because the installer is not code-signed: More info › Run anyway.
  2. 2
Open "Enhance image with AI" › To vector (SVG). Pick the image in "Your image" or drop it on the right. Logos, drawings and flat-color illustrations; not photos.
  3. 3
Choose what the image is. "Logo" (up to 12 flat colors), "Line art" (one-color strokes: signatures, sketches, stamps) or "Illustration" (up to 24 colors, in separate pieces per color).
  4. 4
Check the preview. Original and SVG side by side, instantly and free. If the image is small, "Clean up with AI first" rebuilds the edges before tracing.
  5. 5
Convert to SVG. "Convert to SVG · 1 credit". The SVG lands in "Vectors", at the original's size; "Zoom in" lets you check the details.

If you already work in Illustrator or Inkscape, their tracing gives you more control. AppGrabbit is for when you want the SVG without learning a design program: pick the type, see the result and save.

Good to know

  • Not photos. The app warns you when the image looks like a photo: the result would be color blotches.
  • Gradients come out in bands. The trace uses flat colors.
  • Text becomes shapes. It looks perfect, but it's no longer editable text.
  • It works without a graphics card too. Only "Clean up with AI first" needs one (a card with Vulkan).

Frequently asked questions

What is an SVG?

A vector file: it stores shapes and colors instead of pixels, so it scales to any size without going blurry. Browsers, Canva, Illustrator, Inkscape and cutting machines like Cricut open it.

Can I turn a photo into a vector?

Technically something comes out, but not what you want: a photo has thousands of tones and the vector turns it into color blotches. The app warns you if the image looks like a photo. To enlarge a photo, use the Enhance tab.

How many colors does it use?

Logo, up to 12; Line art, a single one on the background; Illustration, up to 24, each in pieces that don't overlap (what cutting machines need to separate by layers).

Does the SVG come out the same size?

Yes: it keeps the original image's size. Since it's a vector, you can scale it up as much as you like afterwards.

Does it work for Cricut?

Yes: with "Illustration", each color ends up in separate pieces. Keep in mind: many colors means many layers to cut; for vinyl, the fewer colors, the better.

Is it free?

The preview is: you see the original and the SVG side by side, instantly and without spending anything, as many times as you like. Saving the SVG costs 1 credit; the Free plan has 5 credits a month for the whole app. Pro (USD 8.99 a month) or a 2-day pass (USD 2.99) or 7-day pass (USD 3.99) remove credits.

Are my images uploaded to the internet?

No. Tracing happens on your PC, and the AI clean-up on your graphics card; nothing goes through a server. The only things the app sends are what the privacy page lists (license, credits and anonymous counts), never your files.

Does it work on Mac?

No: AppGrabbit is for Windows 10 and 11 only.
